No.13. (R).

Report of correspondent of "Times" from Hongkong is largely based on rumour and not entirely trustworthy For facts see my immediately preceding telegram. Hopes expressed in latter as to support of waverers have been disappointed. Wang resigned yesterday and nas disappeared. Clear issue therefore arises between Chiang and Sino-Russian communists and must be decided shortly.

Hankow apprehensions in these circumstances are to be discounted.

Addressed to Foreign Office No.13, repeated to Peking No.30.
